Germany Clinches World Basketball Championship in Thrilling European Showdown

First-ever world title

Germany won the European clash in the final of the FIBA World Basketball Championships 2023. The Germans defeated Serbia 83-77 to capture the ultimate trophy. For the German men, this is their first-ever world title. The top favorite, the United States, remained without a medal after a defeat against neighboring Canada in the battle for bronze.

Completely even at halftime

For the first time since 2006, the basketball World Cup featured a European final, with Germany against Serbia. This offered Germany, who had defeated the United States (111-113), the route to the final, their first-ever chance at World Cup gold. In a tactically high-stakes final, both teams were completely even at halftime (47-47). Germany then took the lead in the third quarter. Star player Dennis Schröder (28 points) led his team to a 12-point lead early in the fourth quarter.

Avramovic brought hope for Serbia

But the Serbs, who won the semifinal against Canada 95-86, did not give in right away against Germany. Aleksa Avramovic, who had impressed with his defensive skills in the semifinals against Canada, now also played an important role in the attack. With some nice scores he brought back Serbian hopes. At 78-75, Guduric even had the chance to equalize Serbia in the last minute with a three-pointer, but he missed. Then it was Schroeder who dealt the final blow to Serbia, with 4 points in a row.

Germany 1, Serbia 2 and Canada 3

For Germany, this is the first ever World Championship title. MVP Schröder and his team earned it without question, as Germany was the only team at this World Cup to remain undefeated. The bronze went to Canada, which defeated the United States earlier in the day. Dillon Brooks was the hero for the Canadians with 39 points, winning 127-118 after an extension.
