The FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 is in full swing! The 19th edition of FIBA's flagship event is taking place for the first time across three host nations in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia from August 25 to September 10. 32 countries are competing against each other for the world title. Schelde Sports is present during the whole event and keep you up to date. This Thursday, Sept. 7, we present a new recap of the second round and quarterfinals!
Battle of the 16
During the second round, the 16 remaining countries faced off against each other over two days of play to decide who would proceed to the quarterfinals of the World Basketball Championships. Italy did good business with a 78-76 win against Serbia and a convincing 73-57 victory against Puerto Rico. Despite the loss against Italy, Serbia made up for it in the second game against the Dominican Republic with a 112-79 win. Germany made it to the quarterfinals thanks to a 100-73 win against Georgia, almost repeating the score against Slovenia, 100-71.

Ticket for the QF
The United States captured a ticket to the quarterfinals at the expense of Montenegro (85-73). In an exciting match between Latvia and Spain, the win went to Latvia with a 69-74, which also sent Brazil away with a convincing 84-104. With a 91-80 win against Australia, Slovenia also qualified for the next round. However, fellow quarterfinalist Germany took care of business in the second game: 100-71. Lithuania proved itself with double wins against Greece (92-67) and the United States (104-110). Finally, Canada also qualified for the quarterfinals with a win against Spain. That game ended 85-88.
Quarterfinals and spots 5-8
The quarterfinals were held Sept. 5 and 6. The remaining eight countries were part of four exciting matches, starting with Lithuania vs. Serbia. That game was decided 68-87 in favor of the Serbs. The other game on Sept. 5, Italy against the United States, US won with convincing numbers, 63-100. On the second day of the quarterfinals, Germany ran away with the win against Lithuania, 81-79, while Canada also secured a semifinal spot with 100-89 against Slovenia. Today, for spots 5 to 8, Italy plays Latvia and Lithuania plays Slovenia.

Tomorrow, Sept. 8, we get ready for the two semifinals of this WC2023! 16:45 local time Serbia plays against Canada, followed by the United States against Germany at 20:40 local time.
